Russia, EU fighting for Ukrainian pipeline

Russia is trying to press on the European Union to postpone the conference on modernization of the Ukrainian gas-tansport system, planned for March 23 in Brussels, a source close to the conference informed Interfax-Ukraine.

According to the source it is connected with Russia's desire to get a loan for alternative gas routs, namely North and South streams.

"Another possible motive is a desire to include into agenda a question on formation of a consorcium on managing Ukrainian gas-transport system,'' he added.

The official underlined that Moscow does not want the EU to stake on the Ukrainian gas-transport system as a 'strategic artery' of gas transit for European consumers. According to the source, Russia believes that loans for modenization of the Ukrainian gas-transport system will enable the EU to control decisions on transit of the Russian gas via Ukraine.
