Gov't considers possibility to use methane as alternative energy source

The Government will consider a possibility to extract and use mine gas – methane, from the coal deposits. The Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko announced today, opening a special Government’s sitting dedicated to considering investment projects, Government portal reported.

“Utilization of methane is not only an issue of supplementary energy sources but an issue of environment,” the Head of Government stressed.

Yulia Tymoshenko emphasized Ukraine shows off one of the largest amounts of extracted coal. However, according to the Head of Government, this system is not flawless as in the process of extraction the environment is polluted as huge amount of non-utilized gas, methane is injected into the air, so improper utilization of the mine gas leads to cases of explosion and death of miners.

The Premier emphasized methane has to be viewed as a supplementary powerful energy resource as its storages in Donetsk basin alone amount 11.5 bn cu m.
