Ukraine-Romania case will be 'serious precedent' in international maritime law, official says

The decision taken by the International Court of Justice in The Hague on the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones of Ukraine and Romania in the Black Sea will become a "serious precedent" in international maritime law and will be further used during consideration of similar issues, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleksandr Kupchyshyn said at a briefing on Wednesday, Ukrinform reported.

He said that this precedent could be applied during consideration of issues regarding the delimitation of the continental shelf and waters in the Azov and Black Seas and the Kerch Strait between Ukraine and Russia, according to BSANNA News.

"If [Ukraine] fails to agree with Russia at the bilateral level, international maritime law will then have to be used," Kupchyshyn said. He said that the International Court of Justice had used the existing precedents during consideration of the Ukrainian case. They include disputes between Nicaragua and Honduras, Singapore and Malaysia, and the United States and Canada, he said.
