President meets PG to discuss protection of citizens' right for appeals

President Victor Yushchenko met today with Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko. Main subject for the meeting became protection of citizens’ constitutional right to address state authorities and local self-government with appeals, president's press office reported.

Opening the meeting President Yushchenko stressed that one of three appeals, he has received in 2008 from Ukrainian citizens, contained their complains about work of law enforcement bodies or courts. Also, according to the statistics, there were 15 percent more appeals on the matter in 2008 than in 2007 with worst tendencies in Cherkasy, Ternopil and Lviv regions.

According to the President the most often complains are over:
- illegal actions of prosecutor’s offices officials;
- denial of bringing criminal actions and groundless closure of criminal cases;
- delays in investigation;

President Yushchenko suggested holding an expanded sitting of the Prosecutors’ Collegium to discuss processing of citizens’ appeals by prosecution, including the complains over work of law enforcement bodies and the prosecution itself.
