Tymoshenko: Decision on Ukraine's accedence to NATO can be approved only at referendum

“Decision on Ukraine’s accedence to NATO as a system of collective security can be approved only by the people of Ukraine at the all-Ukrainian referendum,” Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko stated, "Cabinet" pressservice reported.

That is a substantial amendment submitted by Yulia Tymoshenko to the letter addressed to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. And just this approach to establishment of relations with NATO, the Head of Government reminds, “has been opened long ago” settled in the coalition agreement of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc faction and “Our Ukraine-People’s Self-defense” Bloc and correspondingly in the draft of the Government Action Program “Ukrainian Breakthrough”.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko states that “integrity of the country, unity of the people, peace and harmonyare above all that’s why the people should know that so important decision as accedence to NATO the power won’t adopt without consultations with them and when this issue will be put on the agenda the people to have the last word at the national referendum”.

As a reminder, President Viktor Yushchenko, PM Yulia Tymoshenko and VRU speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk have signed and forwarded letter (address) to Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer NATO Secretary General concerning Ukraine’s joining Action plan on membership in NATO.

CPU and PR insist on withdrawal of Yatsenyuk’s signature under this document. Because he does not have such authorities.
