President praises opposition reunion

Victor Yushchenko has praised Saturday’s reunion of his parliamentary bloc, Our Ukraine, and ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko’s bloc in his letter to Yulia Tymoshenko and Vyacheslav Kyrylenko, leader of the Our Ukraine faction, President’s press office informed.

“I welcome the reunion of the opposition forces in the Verkhovna Rada as an important condition to resist systematic and blatant violations of Ukraine’s constitution we can all witness in the country’s parliament,” he wrote.

“I share your anxiety about serious threats facing Ukrainian politics and creating real dangerstothe country’s constitutional order, its security and stability, rights and freedoms of the citizens of Ukraine.”

The President said he could not ignore the resentment of "millions of Ukrainians" at the attempts to make Ukraine lapse into authoritarianism.

He reminded them that the reunion of the opposition parties in the summer of 2004 helped defeat the autocratic and corrupt regime and expressed confidence the united opposition would be able to stop the usurpation of power by those who seek political revenge.

“I call on all of the country’s responsible political forces to start constructive cooperation and assure the Ukrainian community I will use my constitutional powers to protect our people, national interests and Ukraine if the attempts to assault the supreme law and civil rights continue,” he said.
