Ukraine's PM comments on EU council decision

Ukraine can initiate accession into the European Union only after achieving European standards of economic development. Prime Minister of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych told journalists commenting on the decision of the EU Council as regards new agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

“It is reasonable, because Ukraine is not ready yet to join the EU. Ukraine must settle internal issues – to increase living standards and economy level, harmonize its legislation with the European one,” Yanukovych specified.

The PM considers that the new Ukraine-EU agreement must be more precise and must give an opportunity to approximate standards of Ukraine’s economy to standards of the European economy.

“That is the main thing. When we achieve this level, we will be able to apply for membership. We do not want to be in humiliating position of the so-called poor country cousin. We must build a state, which will be invited and awaited everywhere,” he underlined.
